When does a UX design pattern become a deceptive pattern?

If both UX design patterns and deceptive patterns use the knowledge of behavioural science to manipulate or ‘guide’ users down a desired path, at what point does a UX pattern become a deceptive pattern? How can you tell if a design pattern is mistakenly manipulative, or done with bad intentions?
